Dooming up out of the depth of the silver block, David’s face was carved away from what was not David. The disc, surrounded by a winged pattern, finishes off the design.
The symmetry of its border gives the design a clean look, the likes of a finished piece of work. The carving has been done. Yet, the asymmetrical carve out lets the mind wander off to seek what is laying behind, leaves wondering what more there is to explore and discover.
David and Michelangelo’s work overall serve as the perfect example of visionaries. Starting off with an idea, we crawl towards our goals and carve away everything that is not David.
